Flow Hives on Rustenberg – a Field Test and Review

Who in this wide world doesn’t love a healthy dollop of honey on their morning cereal, or feel a warm glow in their tummies at the thought of delicious gooey honey.

Well at Rustenberg these feelings are mutual for us, and Rustenberg owner, Simon Barlow has taken his love for honey to the next level and has been keeping his own bees on Rustenberg since 2006.

So when the new and innovative Flow Hives were launched by Australian father and son team, Stuart and Cedar Anderson, Simon meshed his love for innovation with his love for bees, and brought some of the first into South Africa.

Working with bee-expert, Mike Allsop, and his team at the ARC-Plant Protection Research Institute, they have now done a field test of how these Australian designed hives fare with our  Cape bees (Apis mellifera capensis). Although nothing can compare to getting in touch with natural hives and keeping a healthy respect for the business end of the bees, there is certainly a lot to be said about these new convenience hives.

For Mike Allsop’s article on his take on these hives, and a few pics of the first honey harvest from Simon’s hives, see the article here:
